The Spanish government has enforced a new law limiting the speed on motorways in order to save oil. The new speed limit will be 110 km/h instead of the previous 120 km/h.
From 6 a.m. this Monday morning the new speed limit is in place. The government hopes to save 1,400 million euros per year with this new measure.
Under the new law, exceeding the speed limit at eighty kilometers per hour is to be considered a crime.
Until now, drivers who exceeded the 200 km/h on motorways were punished with up to six months imprisonment or a fine of six to twelve months and work for the benefit of the community.
In addition, they had their license withdrawn for at least a year.
From now on, going more than 190 km/h is considered a crime.
